Papaya is one of the fastest-fruiting tropical trees available to Australian gardeners, capable of producing fruit within 10-12 months from seed in warm, tropical conditions. Tracked varieties include Broad Leaf (a large, productive type), Red Army (a vigorous red-fleshed selection with sweet flavour), Red RB4 Hybrid (a commercial hybrid combining yield with quality red flesh), and Solo types (small, single-serving fruit with excellent sweetness). Papaya grows best in tropical and subtropical climates: north Queensland, the NT, Kimberley WA, and frost-free subtropical zones in NSW and Queensland. It does not tolerate frost or temperatures below 5°C. Plants are technically short-lived perennials; most growers replace them every 2-3 years to maintain productivity. Plant in the warmest, most sheltered position in full sun. Papaya requires very free-draining soil as it is highly susceptible to root rot. Mound planting is recommended in heavier soils. Plants have three sexual types (male, female, hermaphrodite); hermaphrodite trees are preferred as they are self-fertile and produce well-shaped fruit. Fertilise heavily with nitrogen during establishment. In WA, papaya is grown in the Kimberley, Pilbara, and in sheltered coastal Perth gardens. No significant quarantine restrictions apply.
