Rollinia, also known as biriba or Brazilian custard apple, is a tropical fruit tree from the Annonaceae family, closely related to custard apple and soursop. It produces large, conical fruit with soft, creamy, lemon-flavoured flesh that many consider among the most delicious of all tropical fruits. In Australia, rollinia is primarily sold as seedlings rather than named varieties, as selected grafted material remains scarce in the commercial trade. Rollinia requires a frost-free tropical to subtropical climate. It grows best in coastal far north Queensland, the NT, and warm sheltered positions in southeast Queensland. Unlike its Annona relatives, rollinia tolerates higher humidity and is somewhat faster-growing. Trees prefer rich, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. They have a relatively shallow root system and benefit from a thick mulch layer and regular fertilising with a balanced tropical fruit fertiliser. Rollinia trees can begin fruiting within 3-4 years from seed when conditions are optimal. Fruit must be eaten when freshly ripe as it deteriorates rapidly; the soft, almost liquid flesh bruises and ferments within 24-48 hours of peak ripeness. This makes rollinia almost exclusively a backyard tree. In WA, rollinia can be attempted in warm, frost-free tropical locations. No specific quarantine restrictions apply.
