Growing Plum in Western Australia

Plums are versatile stone fruits with varieties suited to a wide range of Australian climates, from cool-climate Adelaide Hills and Yarra Valley through to subtropical coastal zones. Tracked varieties include Santa Rosa (self-fertile, reliable, red-skinned with sweet tart flesh, one of the most popular garden plums in Australia), Angelino (large, dark purple, late-season, excellent shelf life), Blood Plum (deep red flesh throughout, rich sweet flavour, heritage type), October Purple (a late-season variety with firm, sweet flesh), and Luisa (a large, golden-yellow plum with sweet, aromatic flesh). Chill requirements vary considerably: Japanese plums such as Santa Rosa need 500-700 hours, while some European-type plums need more. Most need at least one compatible cross-pollinator, though Santa Rosa sets well alone. Plant in full sun in well-drained, deep soil with a pH of 6.0-6.5. Apply a balanced stone fruit fertiliser in late winter. Brown rot and fruit fly are the primary challenges. Prune to an open vase shape to improve airflow and reduce fungal disease. In WA, plums are grown across the Perth Hills and south-west. Movement of stone fruit plant material into WA is restricted; always source from state-accredited suppliers and confirm compliance before ordering interstate. Fruit fly baiting is mandatory across most WA shires.
