Growing Pear in Western Australia

Pears are a classic temperate fruit tree requiring meaningful winter chill (600-900 hours for most European varieties) and a long, warm growing season to ripen fully. Tracked varieties include Beurre Bosc (semi-dwarf form, classic russet-brown pear with buttery, aromatic flesh), Nijiseiki/20th Century Nashi (a popular Japanese nashi with crisp, apple-like texture and sweet, juicy flesh), Beurre Hardy (a heritage European variety with rich, perfumed flesh, cold-hardy and reliable), and William (also known as Williams Bon Chretien, the most widely grown pear in Australia, excellent for fresh eating and bottling). European pears are best in cool climates: Adelaide Hills, Yarra Valley, Orange NSW, Stanthorpe, and the WA south coast. Nashi pears tolerate a slightly wider range and produce well in the Swan Valley and Perth Hills. Most European pears require cross-pollination; plant at least two compatible varieties. Nashi varieties are partially self-fertile. Plant in full sun in deep, free-draining, slightly acidic soil. Water during fruit development and mulch well to retain moisture. Fire blight is a bacterial disease that can devastate pear plantings in humid conditions; choose resistant varieties and sterilise pruning tools between cuts. In WA, pears are grown commercially in the south and in home gardens throughout the south-west.
