Growing Nectarine in Western Australia
Nectarines are smooth-skinned peaches, sharing the same cultural requirements and climatic preferences. They need winter chill (500-800 hours for most varieties), good summer heat, and low humidity during fruit ripening. Tracked varieties include Crimson Baby (dwarf form, suitable for containers and small spaces), Early Rivers (early-ripening, reliable flavour), Tuscany (mid-season, rich and aromatic), Sundowner (late-season, firm flesh, excellent keeper), and Goldmine (white-fleshed, highly sweet). Most nectarines are self-fertile. Plant in full sun in deep, well-drained loam with a pH of 6.0-6.5. Apply a balanced stone fruit fertiliser in late winter and again in spring. Water consistently during fruit development to prevent pit hardening and cracking. Brown rot is the primary disease concern; apply copper sprays at petal fall and again as fruit ripens in wet years. Leaf curl is best managed with a single dormant spray of copper hydroxide in late winter before bud swell. In WA, nectarines grow well in the Perth Hills and southern inland regions. Fruit fly is the critical pest in WA and eastern Australia; exclusion bags or protein bait traps are essential from shuck fall. In WA, movement of stone fruit plant material is restricted; source only from state-accredited suppliers.
