Growing Mandarin in Queensland
Mandarins are among the easiest citrus to grow in Australian home gardens and the most popular for fresh eating. They ripen earlier than oranges, providing fruit from late autumn through winter. They suit a wide range of climates, from subtropical Queensland to cool temperate Victoria.
Mandarins thrive in full sun with regular watering and citrus fertiliser. Trees are generally smaller and more manageable than oranges. Most are self-fertile. Grafted trees fruit within 2-3 years. Satsuma varieties are the most cold-tolerant and suit southern climates well.
Varieties available include Imperial (classic, juicy, mid-season), Satsuma (cold-tolerant, early season, very sweet), Emperor (large fruit, good flavour, popular in QLD), Hickson (consistent performer, late season), Page (cross between mandarin and grapefruit, excellent flavour), and Ellendale (large, peels easily).
Mandarins are stocked by most nurseries and available year-round. They are one of the most commonly grown backyard fruit trees in Australia.
