Growing Guava in Western Australia

Guava is one of the most productive and adaptable tropical fruit trees available to Australian gardeners, producing abundant fruit across a wide range of warm climates. Tracked varieties include Brazilian guava (large, cream-fleshed, sweet), China Pear guava (pear-shaped, mild flavour), Hawaiian (large, pink-fleshed, aromatic, well-suited to tropical gardens), and Strawberry Guava (a smaller-leafed species producing tart, red fruit used mainly in jams and juices). Guavas thrive in coastal Queensland, northern NSW, the NT, and the warm Kimberley and coastal regions of WA. Trees prefer full sun and are highly drought-tolerant once established, though regular watering during fruiting improves yield and fruit size. They will grow in a wide range of soils, including poor and slightly alkaline types, but perform best in free-draining loam. Fruit is produced year-round in the tropics and from late summer to winter in subtropical zones. Guavas are generous feeders; apply a balanced fertiliser every 2-3 months. Note that Strawberry Guava is classified as an invasive weed in parts of Queensland and NSW. In WA, Strawberry Guava is on the alert list; check local regulations before planting. Common guava is not restricted in WA.
