Growing Grapefruit in Western Australia

Grapefruit is a tropical to warm subtropical citrus tree that performs best in regions with long, hot summers and mild winters. In Australia, the best crops come from the inland Queensland and NSW citrus belts, the Northern Territory, and the warm Swan Valley and Carnarvon regions of WA. Tracked varieties include Rio Red, a leading pigmented variety with deep red flesh and reduced bitterness compared to older white-fleshed types. Rio Red is popular for fresh eating and juice. Grapefruit trees are vigorous and will reach 4-6 metres without regular pruning. Plant in full sun in well-drained, slightly acidic soil (pH 6.0-6.5). Apply a citrus-specific fertiliser three times per year (spring, summer, and autumn). Water consistently during fruit development to prevent rind puffing and internal granulation. Grapefruit takes 12-14 months from flowering to full maturity and is typically harvested from June to October in most Australian regions. In WA, grapefruit is grown commercially in the Gascoyne region and in home gardens across the Perth metro area. As with all citrus, plant material entering WA must comply with state biosecurity rules. Confirm supplier accreditation before ordering from interstate. Citrus gall wasp is a significant pest in eastern Australia.
