Growing Feijoa in Western Australia
Feijoa, also known as pineapple guava, is a tough, ornamental fruit tree from South America that has become popular across temperate and subtropical Australia. It is hardy to at least minus 5°C once established, making it one of the more cold-tolerant subtropical fruits available. Tracked varieties include Apollo, Duffy, and Unique. Apollo and Unique are both self-fertile, though cross-pollination improves yields significantly. Duffy is a reliable producer of mid-season fruit. Plant in full sun to part shade in free-draining soil; feijoa tolerates a wide pH range (6.0-7.5) and moderate drought once established. In warmer climates such as southeast Queensland and coastal NSW, fruit quality and yield are reduced compared to cooler zones. The ideal climate is a mild temperate region with cool winters, such as the Adelaide Hills, Yarra Valley, Macedon Ranges, or Perth Hills. Bees are essential for pollination; the flowers are also edible with a sweet, rose-water flavour. Fruit ripens from March to June and falls naturally when ready. The skin is edible but astringent; most people scoop the soft, aromatic flesh. Feijoa is not subject to major quarantine restrictions in WA but always confirm before moving plant material between states.
