Growing Blueberry in New South Wales
Blueberries divide into two main climatic groups in Australia, and choosing the right type for your region is critical. Subtropical and low-chill varieties, including Biloxi, Northland, and Sharpblue, are suited to coastal Queensland, northern NSW, and warm parts of WA where winter chill is limited. Cool-climate varieties, including Darrow, Elliott, and Legacy, perform best in the Adelaide Hills, Yarra Valley, Tasmanian lowlands, and the WA south coast. Blueberries are fussy about soil: they require a strongly acidic pH of 4.5-5.5. Amend with sulfur well ahead of planting if your native soil is alkaline. They also demand excellent drainage combined with consistent moisture. Plant in raised beds with a generous layer of acidic mulch such as pine bark or wood chip. Most varieties benefit from cross-pollination, so plant at least two different varieties. In subtropical regions, blueberries can produce two crops per year. In cool climates, fruit ripens from November to February depending on variety. Birds are the primary pest; netting is essential once fruit begins to colour. Fertilise with an acid-specific fertiliser (avoid phosphorus-heavy blends) and avoid liming soils near blueberry plants.
