Growing Avocado in New South Wales
Avocado (Persea americana) is grown across a wide range of Australian climates: subtropical coastal QLD and NSW, the Perth Hills region, South Australia's warmer areas, and even parts of coastal Victoria. They need well-drained soil and protection from frost when young.
Good drainage is the most critical requirement. Avocados are highly susceptible to Phytophthora root rot in waterlogged soils. Most varieties are described as Type A or Type B based on when their flowers are receptive, and planting both types near each other significantly improves fruit set. Grafted trees typically begin fruiting within 2-4 years.
Varieties tracked on treestock include Hass (Type A, the most widely grown worldwide), Reed (Type A, large round fruit), Wurtz (Type A, compact dwarf variety suited to smaller gardens), Fuerte (Type B, green pear-shaped fruit), Bacon (Type B, cold-tolerant), and Sharwil (Type B, popular in WA). Wurtz is a popular choice for home gardeners due to its manageable size.
Avocados are available from most nurseries year-round. WA buyers have access to several local nurseries. Cross-pollination pairs are sometimes sold together (e.g. Hass and Fuerte, or Bacon and Hass).
